I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the internet has become a cactus patch, filled to the brim with prickly little annoyances that are a pain in the posterior to dig out once they pierce your defenses. My goal is to not be one of those bothersome succulents. So here’s the deal.

This site doesn’t store anything more than it needs to store in order to provide you with what you want from me. Basically, that means:

  • Your name (or whatever name you entered, I’m not a mind reader)
  • Your email address (or whatever address you entered, though this being a newsletter, you’ll probably want to give me a real one)
  • Your IP address (computers care about this for all sorts of computery purposes I can only begin to understand.
  • Any comments you might post on my site if you signed up to post comments (because it would be kind of mean to disregard your comment)

That’s it for me, but there’s some other sites that are pitching in to keep this place from becoming an obstacle course of spam. As entertaining as some of it is, probably we’re better off not wading through hip-deep ads for Russian Pharmaceuticals and whatever exciting new virus is en vogue this week. So the anti-spam tools and hosting tools I have will get all of the same info above. Cleantalk and WordFence are the main ones.

There’s other internet detritus to be considered of course. There are some cookies. We use these to keep you logged in if you choose to sign up for the site and ask for that sort of thing. I’m not web savvy enough to do anything more nefarious than that.

The whole server and communication chain is locked up as tight as I can manage. We’ve got SSL and other acronyms/initialisms that cause hackers to grumble and move on rather than fire up the quantum computer just to learn some bookworm’s email address.

If something goes wrong and there’s even the chance someone you don’t want to have your data got it, we’ll tell you. And if you decide you don’t want US to have your data, just ask and we’ll throw your digital doodads in the proverbial paper shredder. (Surely there’s some sort of proverb that mentions paper shredders by now.)

What do you get in exchange for these bits of data? Here’s the list:

  • My Newsletter
  • … That’s it.

I have no desire to use your data for anything other than giving you updates on my various book news. New Releases, useful information, that’s all. I generally plan to send a single newsletter each month, and because of how my mind works, I typically only succeed in sending one about every three months. What I’m getting at is you aren’t signing up for a mailbox full of packing peanuts. Just the good stuff, or at least, just the stuff that’s relevant to the literary byproduct of my mind-wanderings.

That’s all! Have fun, and thanks for your interest!
